Unfortunately one of our couples were unable to return for the 2027 season so we have an opening for a couple that would be willing to support office and grounds activities for 2-4 days a week for a duration of early May through early September/October Our normal operating staff consists of 3 couples. The daily routine averages about 6 active hours each per person (+/- 1-2 hours depending on how busy the park is in peak/non-peak). As the owner my goal is that all the couples do not get overworked and enjoy the area and their time. I prefer the couples get together and determine the work schedule that fits their lifestyle. To give perspective the hosts continue to return year after year as this is a great place to live and work as couples are treated like family.

Duties include but not limited to:
- Front Office: reservations, guest relations, phone handling, and computer operation. Must have experience with customers, phone (comfortable taking/returning calls), and computers. Volunteers needed in 6th grade Environmental Education Program 10/4/26 thru 4/3/27. This is a full 6-month position. Selection Priority is given to couples, but singles will also be considered. Main duty is to assist Park Rangers during curriculum-based environmental field trips to the preserve with student groups and occasionally lead groups if needed. This includes helping with group management, safety, and assisting students with the use of scientific equipment. Groups hike through cypress swamps, prairies and pinelands. For much of the season the hike will be in knee-deep water.

Volunteers may also assist rangers with wet walks, canoe trips, festivals and special events in the preserve and neighboring communities and other projects when needed.

Each volunteer must work a minimum of 30 hrs/week each. Workdays are typically weekdays but may vary each week and include some weekends for an occasional special program, event or festival. Volunteers will have time off during Thanksgiving and Christmas break. Volunteers have the opportunity to assist other divisions with projects, visit other agencies in the area and training opportunities.

Volunteers must have enthusiasm, enjoy and have experience working with children, good communication skills and flexibility with a changing work-week schedule. A teaching background and knowledge of natural science are a plus but not required. Must be able to hike sometimes in hip deep water on a rough trail in the South Florida heat with long periods of standing! Volunteers are subject to a Federal Government Background Check. This is not a paid position. An R.V. Pad with full hook ups in our volunteer campground is provided. Laundry facilities, pool and weight room are available.

We provide an RV site with full hookups and utilities (electric, water, sewer) for the season valued at $20K. Host's RV unit is subject to minimum quality standards and must be preapproved with a 2-vehicle limit in addition to the RV. Additionally, we pay a stipend of $1,000/mo plus a cleaning fee after each checkout. These cash payments approximate $20k per season. Host will greet guests upon check-in. Check-ins are staggered due to 2-3 night minimum stays. Resort hosts must be cordial toward guests at all times and possess a friendly, gracious disposition. Our 34-acre headquarter site in Lake Jackson, Texas, lies on Buffalo Camp Bayou, and is adjacent to Wilderness Park and the Wilderness Golf Course. Ample shopping, dining, and entertainment are within 5 minutes. Previous RV host experience strongly preferred, but not required. Birders and nature lovers a plus. Couples encouraged, but not required. GCBO is open to the visiting public year-round. RV hosts should expect to work about 28hrs per week total (total per couple or single).

RV Volunteers are a vital part of the sanctuary operation. As RV volunteers, your duties will include grounds maintenance, mowing and gardening, building and equipment maintenance, light cleaning of office building, at times possibly opening and closing facilities, helping with events, nature store or office work.
